![]() "Hello and welcome to Turrican, be my guest ... Another day another try ... But remember ... SHOOT OR DIE!! AHHHAAHHAAAHHAAAAHAAAAAAA!" The 'Turrican' series of games are possibly some of the most famous and best remembered games on the C64. They featured an excellent main character armed with an awe-inspiring selection of weapons. Programmer Manfred Trenz managed to coax every ounce of processing power out of the humble C64 in order to treat gamers to vast smoothly scrolling levels to explore, massive end of level bosses to defeat along with shoot 'em up sections boasting clever graphical effects including gorgeous parallax scrolling and much more besides! And so it is our great pleasure to present our tribute to these classic Commodore 64 games - a superb audio CD entitled 'Shoot Or Die - The Music Of Turrican C64'.
The music for the Turrican games is very interesting as it features the combined talents of multiple artists rather than a single musician. The only other game of note to do this was the first classic 'Last Ninja' game! The first Turrican game features an audial feast prepared by Ramiro Vaca and Stefan Hartwig, a digi routine supplied by Jeroen Tel and the vocal talents of Markus Wiederstein who bellows out the intro speech at the start of the game. Interestingly, Chris Huelsbeck did not actually produce any music for the C64 version of the game, but some of his music from the Amiga version was covered in the C64 game by the other musicians.
For 'Turrican II - The Final Fight' the musical reigns were handed over to Markus Siebold - although Stefan Hartwig once again supplied the loading theme. For the main game Markus composed a memorable set of driving in-game themes and funky title / game over tracks, all of which are featured on the 'Shoot Or Die' CD.
Don't be misled by the name of Turrican II - it wasn't actually the 'Final Fight' for Turrican who made a surprise return to the C64 in 2004. Legendary demo crew 'Smash Designs' were so inspired by the classic games they decided to release an unofficial 3rd chapter themselves - and the resulting game was awesome ! Possibly not quite in the same league as the first two games but still a fantastic achievement nonetheless. The music for Turrican III was handled by Tammo Hinrichs (KB) and Tufan Uysal (SoNiC) of Smash Designs with a couple of belting tunes by Søren Lund (Jeff) thrown into the mix. If you haven't already played it I can heartily recommend you head on over to the Smash Designs website, download the game and SHOOT OR DIE!!
